Unexpected T_STRING

Hi,

I am new to Open Review Script, and very inexperienced with php.

I have recently installed Open Review Script on my website, which is hosted with 1&1. I got the error that mod_rewrite was not available, so URL rewrites would not work. Despite adding various things to the .htaccess, as per advice I have found via google, I haven't managed to fix this problem yet.

When visiting the reviews page (mysite/reviews) I initially got a blank page. Having searched this forum I turned the error messages on, and now get the following error:

Parse error: syntax error, unexpected T_STRING, expecting T_OLD_FUNCTION or T_FUNCTION or T_VAR or '}' in /homepages/21/d339795780/htdocs/reviews/system/core/Config.php on line 294

I have tried searching for this, but am not getting anywhere further.

Can anyone advise on turning on URL re-writing with 1&1, or on what the above error means / how to fix?

Visiting mysite/reviews/manager produces a 404 error, which I'm guessing may have to do with the URL rewrite issue?
